Disney Terminates Metaverse Division as Part of Mass Layoffs

The Walt Disney Company has laid off its Metaverse team, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The Walt Disney Company has laid off a small team of about 50 people developing Metaverse strategies as part of a broader restructuring that will reduce its headcount by about 7,000 people.

Disney had hired Mike White to lead Metaverse efforts, The Block reported in February 2022. White will remain with the company, but it's not yet clear what his role will be, the Wall Street Journal reported. A memo penned by then-CEO Bob Chapek said the former Apollo Group CTO would be tasked with connecting the company's "physical and digital worlds."
