U.S. Treasury Secretary Shifts Bitcoin Stance: Additional Purchases Back on the Table

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled a possible change in policy on the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve with a second statement later in the day.

In the morning, Bessent told Fox Business that the $15–$20 billion reserve would consist solely of existing assets, with no plans for new Bitcoin purchases. However, his evening post on social media suggested otherwise, stating that the reserve would be built primarily from government-seized Bitcoin, while also exploring “budget-friendly ways” to acquire more.

The Trump administration, through an executive order signed in March, established the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve with the stated goal of making the U.S. the “Bitcoin superpower” of the world. Bessent’s later remarks have been interpreted as opening the door to additional acquisitions in line with this vision.

Market analysts say Bessent’s conflicting positions highlight a flexible and opportunity-driven approach to Washington’s Bitcoin strategy, potentially fueling expectations for increased government-driven demand in the crypto market.
