Alipay Owner Ant Group Begins Preparations for Stablecoin in Hong Kong

Chinese fintech giant Ant Group has filed a trademark for “AntCoin” in Hong Kong, marking its first major step toward Web3 and stablecoin-based financial services.

Ant Group’s filing with Hong Kong’s Intellectual Property Department reveals plans to merge the Alipay ecosystem with blockchain-based financial infrastructure. The trademark covers a broad range of services including banking, foreign exchange, stablecoin issuance, digital asset custody, and blockchain-based payments, laying the legal groundwork for a regulated Web3 payment network.

Ant Group Chairman Eric Jing is scheduled to appear at the upcoming Hong Kong FinTech Week, alongside key financial figures such as Christopher Hui and Fred Hu. The event, which will focus heavily on crypto and digital assets, is seen as a potential stage for Ant Group to publicly present its Web3 ambitions.

The company had previously stated that it was reviewing Hong Kong’s new stablecoin licensing regime, which came into effect in August. The AntCoin trademark marks the first concrete step toward a regulated stablecoin or digital payment solution. Meanwhile, Ant Group continues to test its new wallet product “TOPNOD” in overseas markets such as Singapore, further expanding its Web3 strategy.
