Arthur Hayes Cautions that US Bitcoin Purchases Will Face Political Obstacles

Arthur Hayes, the co-founder of BitMEX and a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency sector, stated that increasing the U.S.'s Bitcoin (BTC) reserves is politically unlikely.

In an interview on May 1, Hayes highlighted the difficulty of creating a "strategic Bitcoin reserve" beyond the approximately 200,000 BTC that the U.S. currently holds. He pointed out that the majority of the BTC held by the U.S. government comes from seized assets related to the Silk Road and Bitfinex cases.

Hayes believes that it would be politically difficult for the U.S. to justify purchasing more Bitcoin. Specifically, he mentioned that the public image of the "Bitcoin Bros," a group of Bitcoin enthusiasts, would make it hard for any official to justify such purchases. These comments follow the executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, which aimed to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

Despite the challenges, Hayes acknowledged that increasing the U.S. Bitcoin reserves could have a significant global impact. However, he emphasized that the chances of this happening in the near future remain low.
