Bitcoin “Hard Fork” Claims Spark Controversy as Luke Dashjr Denies Allegations

Bitcoin’s future is once again under heated debate as allegations of a planned “hard fork” involving long-time developer Luke Dashjr stirred controversy within the community.

On September 25, a report claimed that Dashjr aimed to introduce a multi-signature committee with powers to retroactively alter the blockchain through Bitcoin Knots. The article cited supposed leaked messages where Dashjr allegedly said: “Either Bitcoin dies, or we have to trust someone.”

Dashjr, however, firmly denied the claims, stating that he never proposed such a fork and describing the rumors as a smear campaign meant to undermine his work. He reiterated multiple times: “Nothing has changed. Nobody wants a hard fork.”

The debate highlighted once more the policy differences between Bitcoin Knots and Bitcoin Core. While Knots enforces stricter measures against non-financial data like Ordinals and Runes, Core developers tolerate such data as long as it does not disrupt the network. Critics called the alleged proposal a “threat to Bitcoin’s immutability,” while supporters saw it as a targeted attack. Interestingly, even Ordinals advocate Udi Wertheimer defended Dashjr, saying: “This is propaganda, fake news. Luke is not proposing any hard fork."
