Cryptocurrencies, like computers and software, require updates and improvements to fix errors and malfunctions. Updates on the relevant cryptocurrency are known as soft-forks, and SegWit (Segregated Witness) is a protocol upgrade for Bitcoin that changes the way transaction data is stored in blocks. It enables more transactions to fit into each block, and addresses certain security issues. This update was activated on the Bitcoin network in August 2017.
