Caroline Pham, Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), emphasized that the crypto-friendly stance during the Trump administration does not exempt the sector from legal accountability.
Speaking at Coinbase’s annual summit, Pham stated that supporting innovation should not come at the expense of the law, underlining that the agency’s top priority remains combating fraud and misconduct. She criticized the Biden administration for overstepping legal boundaries, warning that such an approach could undermine the integrity of the broader financial system.
Pham also argued that cryptocurrencies must become an integral part of everyday life—so widely accepted that banning them becomes politically impossible. She compared this to Uber’s adoption, noting that once a technology is embedded in daily life, the public won't allow it to be removed. Her remarks coincided with discussions around the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at resolving the regulatory power struggle between the CFTC and the SEC. Pham also announced her departure from the role, with Brian Quintez from a16z Crypto expected to be her successor.
