China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) claimed at a press conference on Tuesday that despite the country's ban on cryptocurrencies, it accounted for more than 84 percent of the world's blockchain patent applications. However, MIIT did not cite sources for data on global blockchain patent applications.
Wang Jianwei, Deputy Director of MIIT IT Development Department, said that blockchain is now rapidly integrating with the economy and government affairs.
China has banned cryptocurrencies, but blockchain technology is being used by companies and the government. The Chinese Academy of Information and Communication Technology, an academy supported by MIIT, said in July that there were more than 1,300 blockchain companies in China as of March this year.
