CME Launches the Tokenized Cash Era: A New Milestone in Institutional Collateral

CME Group, one of the world’s largest derivatives market operators, is preparing to introduce a tokenized cash-based product aimed at collateral use in derivatives trading. CEO Terrence Duffy stated that the product, developed in collaboration with Google Cloud, is expected to go live within the year. The announcement closely follows a US regulatory pilot allowing certain digital assets to be used as collateral, making the timing particularly notable.

While technical details remain limited, the structure is expected to resemble either a tokenized cash model or an institution-issued standalone token. Market participants suggest it could be similar to JPMorgan’s tokenized deposit framework, designed to bring efficiency and transparency to collateral management through onchain infrastructure.

Management emphasized that not all tokens will qualify as acceptable collateral. The credibility, regulatory standing, and systemic importance of the issuing institution will be key factors. In parallel, plans are underway to transition crypto futures and options markets to a 24/7 trading model in early 2026, underlining the growing role of digital assets within the global financial system.
