Rostin Behnam, Chairman of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), pointed to increased enforcement activity in the cryptocurrency market in the near future. Behnam stated that he foresees an enforcement cycle that will last from the next six months to two years, and explained that this cycle will be driven by the appreciation of cryptocurrencies and the increasing interest of individual investors. He also emphasized that such regulatory interventions will be imperative to prevent incidents of fraud and manipulation in the industry.
Over the past year, regulatory bodies such as the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) have imposed various sanctions against major cryptocurrency platforms such as Binance and FTX. Behnam warned that without a regulatory framework and transparency, such illegal activities will continue.
