El Salvador celebrated the fourth anniversary of its Bitcoin law with President Nayib Bukele announcing the purchase of 21 BTC, bringing the country’s total holdings to 6,313 BTC, worth approximately $701.8 million at current market prices.
Bukele, who made history in 2021 by declaring Bitcoin legal tender, said on social media, “Buying 21 bitcoin for Bitcoin Day.” The country’s Bitcoin Office emphasized that reserves continue to grow through daily purchases of 1 BTC, highlighting the symbolic value of this latest acquisition.
The purchase followed recent security measures, with the government splitting its Bitcoin reserves across 14 different addresses to guard against potential quantum threats. Meanwhile, a new law passed by parliament allows major financial institutions to apply for licenses to offer Bitcoin and digital asset services.
Although reports earlier this year suggested that public sector Bitcoin purchases had been halted due to an IMF loan agreement, Bukele dismissed these claims in March, declaring, “Purchases will never stop.” The latest move once again underscores El Salvador’s firm commitment to Bitcoin.
