The Ethereum Foundation has announced a major strategic update aimed at aligning its use of substantial ETH reserves with long-term goals.
The foundation plans to provide stronger support to the ecosystem during market downturns or other critical periods, with the next 18 months described as pivotal. This move involves realigning short-term operations with broader strategic priorities.
In a push for greater transparency, the foundation will begin publishing quarterly and annual financial reports. As of October 31, 2024, the foundation holds $970 million in total assets, including $788.7 million in crypto holdings and $181.5 million in non-crypto investments. It also aims to boost DeFi interaction, including solo staking, investing wETH in yield-bearing lending protocols, and exploring stablecoin borrowing and real-world asset exposure for enhanced returns.
Responding to criticism about stagnation and rising competition from ecosystems like Solana, the foundation appointed two new co-directors in March and pledged a renewed focus on cypherpunk principles. Going forward, the Ethereum Foundation will emphasize the use of open-source, privacy-focused tools and lead by example through active participation in decentralized finance.
