The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has announced the removal of the "reputation risk" criterion used in banking oversight. This change aims to address the barriers faced by cryptocurrency companies in accessing banking services.
Advocates of the cryptocurrency industry have argued that the "reputation risk" concept was vague and subjective, leading to the exclusion of legitimate crypto firms from banking services. Crypto and AI Coordinator David Sacks hailed this move by the FDIC as a major victory, stating that banking oversight should no longer be based on public relations or false narratives.
Sacks also remarked, "This decision marks a significant step in ending the 'Operation Choke Point 2.0' process." Representatives from the crypto sector have described this change as a "huge victory" against "Choke Point 2.0," emphasizing that future oversight will be based on more objective and quantitative data. This development is seen as a promising sign for greater access to financial services for cryptocurrency companies.
