Spar, a major supermarket chain in Switzerland's crypto-friendly city of Zug, has announced that it has started accepting Bitcoin (BTC) payments.
Payments are processed via the Lightning Network, allowing customers to quickly complete purchases by scanning QR codes at checkout. According to an April 17 announcement by DFX Swiss, the Zug location has also been added to the BTCmap community, officially recognizing it as a crypto-accepting retailer.
Switzerland is already one of Europe’s most crypto-friendly nations, with over 1,000 businesses accepting cryptocurrency payments. Previously, the city of Lugano began accepting Bitcoin and USDT for municipal payments. Rahim Taghizadegan, President of the Swiss Bitcoin Association, highlighted the simplicity of the process and expressed optimism about its potential nationwide expansion.
The development is seen as a significant step in integrating crypto into everyday life, especially as the country’s blockchain ecosystem, Crypto Valley, grew 55% in value last year, surpassing $593 billion.
