Japan’s financial authority is reviewing regulatory changes that would allow banks to hold Bitcoin and other digital assets for investment purposes.
The Financial Services Agency (FSA) of Japan is reportedly considering a new regulatory framework that would permit banks to invest in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The move aims to integrate traditional financial institutions into the country’s rapidly expanding digital asset market.
Under the proposed rules, banks would be allowed to trade cryptocurrencies just like they do with stocks and government bonds. Regulators are also planning to let banking groups register as crypto exchange operators, a step expected to boost institutional confidence and make crypto trading more accessible for retail investors.
Analysts say this development could mark a turning point for Japan’s financial sector. Allowing banks to directly hold digital assets could attract significant institutional capital and intensify competition among Asian markets adopting crypto-friendly regulations.
