New York Makes History: Mayor Eric Adams Launches Nation’s First Office for Digital Assets

New York Mayor Eric Adams has established the nation’s first municipal office dedicated to digital assets and blockchain, marking a major step toward financial innovation and inclusion.

New York Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order on Tuesday officially creating the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain, the first of its kind in the United States. The office aims to promote the responsible use of digital assets, support innovation, and strengthen New York’s position as a global leader in financial technology.

The office will be led by Moises Rendon, who has worked on digital assets for the city over the past year. “Our city has always been the center of innovation,” Adams said. “The age of digital assets is here, and with it comes the opportunity to grow our economy, attract global talent, and expand financial access to underbanked communities.”

The new office will coordinate between the city government and the digital asset industry, collaborate with state and federal regulators on crypto-friendly policies, and attract blockchain-based investment to the city. Its broader goal is to enhance New York’s competitiveness in financial innovation.

Adams, who is known for his crypto-friendly stance, famously received his first three paychecks in Bitcoin and spearheaded the city’s first crypto summit. However, he recently announced that he would not seek reelection, citing campaign finance challenges and media speculation.
