A Philippine lawmaker has proposed the creation of a strategic reserve of 10,000 Bitcoin to strengthen the country’s national security and economic stability.
According to Congressman Migz Villafuerte’s bill, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas would purchase 2,000 BTC annually over five years, holding the assets for at least 20 years. The proposal highlights Bitcoin’s limited supply as a key factor that could make it a long-term strategic store of value for the nation.
Villafuerte argued that this move could ease the country’s debt burden, shield the economy against crises, and position the Philippines as a pioneer in Asia in adopting Bitcoin as a national reserve asset.
The idea of governments building Bitcoin reserves is gaining traction globally. After El Salvador’s historic decision to make Bitcoin legal tender, the Philippines’ proposal could spark renewed debate among central banks about integrating digital assets into their reserve strategies. If approved, the country would be among the first in Asia to adopt Bitcoin in this way.
