Raoul Pal, a former Goldman Sachs executive, says the U.S. government's plans to stockpile large amounts of Bitcoin (BTC) could have negative consequences for the cryptocurrency world. At the recent Bitcoin2024 Conference, presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that if elected, the administration would stockpile four million Bitcoins as a strategic reserve. At the same event, Senator Cynthia Lummis introduced a bill that would require the government to accumulate one million BTC over five years, or 5% of the total supply.
Raoul Pal is concerned that such accumulations would give the government excessive control over the Bitcoin market. In a conversation with Anthony Scaramucci, founder of Skybridge Capital, Pal recalled that the government has abused its power in the past, noting that Bitcoin was created to reduce government control over money, but now that the government has become one of the largest buyers, this goal could be jeopardized. Pal warned that the government could manipulate the market with large reserves of Bitcoin, which could have unintended consequences for the crypto world.
