SafeMoon (SFM) is a decentralized finance (DeFi) token launched in March 2021 on the Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain). The project quickly gained popularity due to its unique tokenomics: a 10% fee on each transaction, with 5% redistributed to existing holders and 5% added to a liquidity pool. This mechanism was designed to encourage long-term holding and reduce price volatility.
With a 9.66% drop in the past 24 hours, SFM is among the day’s top losing assets.
The decline follows the conviction of SafeMoon CEO Braden Karony, who was found guilty by a U.S. federal jury of fraud and money laundering charges for allegedly misusing millions of dollars in investor funds for personal expenses.
According to prosecutors, Karony used around $9 million from investors to purchase luxury cars and real estate. While Karony has denied the allegations, the legal developments may have contributed to the recent decline in SFM's market value.
