The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has officially approved an essential mechanism for Bitcoin and Ethereum-based ETFs, marking a historic milestone for crypto markets.
Under this long-awaited approval, spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs can now utilize in-kind creation and redemption processes. According to Jamie Selway, Director of SEC’s Division of Trading and Markets, the newly approved system will offer substantial cost savings and operational efficiency for ETF issuers and investors. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins described the decision as a significant step toward establishing a sensible and appropriate regulatory framework for crypto assets, emphasizing its potential to deepen and energize crypto markets for American investors.
Leading financial giants such as BlackRock, Ark21, Fidelity, VanEck, and Franklin Templeton can now directly transfer Bitcoin and Ethereum for ETF products. Previously, the cash-based system required ETF issuers to rapidly sell their crypto holdings and deliver cash to investors, a process now significantly streamlined.
Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart highlighted that this regulatory update could pave the way for future altcoin ETFs to also utilize in-kind processes, bringing crypto-based ETFs in line with traditional ETF standards.
