SEC Grants Generic Listing Approval for Ethereum ETFs

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has allowed Grayscale’s Ethereum ETFs to trade under generic listing standards, removing the need for special approvals.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has taken a key step for Ethereum-based ETFs offered by Grayscale. In a ruling published on September 23, the regulator approved NYSE Arca’s proposed rule change, shifting the funds from “Non-Generic” to “Generic” status. This means the ETFs will no longer require case-by-case approval from the SEC to continue trading.

Previously, these Ethereum ETFs had been granted individual approvals before launching in 2024. With this new framework, they will now be governed under the same standards as other commodity-based ETFs. Analysts highlight that this change enhances predictability and flexibility in the market. For investors, it ensures uninterrupted trading without regulatory uncertainty.

This decision is seen as a milestone in the path toward standardization in the crypto ETF sector. By aligning Ethereum ETFs with traditional exchange-traded products, the SEC not only strengthens the institutional foundation of these funds but also potentially opens the door for similar structures based on other digital assets in the future.
