One of the most anticipated Ethereum upgrades, the Shapella Upgrade, has been successfully activated. With the implementation of Shapella, Ethereum's transition to Proof of Stake (PoS) is now complete. Shapella Upgrade has reactivated staking withdrawals with its most important feature, EIP 4895. With the new upgrade, more than 18 million ETH, which equates to about 15% of the total Ethereum supply, has now unlocked after 2 years. However, a daily limit has been set for withdrawals. Ethereum developers have said that rewards will be prioritized. Approximately 1.1 million ETH rewards can be withdrawn in equal amounts, 258 ETH per day, within four to five days. On the other hand, the daily limit for staked ETH withdrawals is 58,000 ETH.
Prior to the mainnet launch, Ethereum developers conducted trials on testnets, including Sepolia, Zhejiang, and Goerli. Finally, the upgrade was enabled on the Goerli Testnet.
What is the significance of the Shapella Upgrade?
Shapella is a combination of Shanghai and Capella, two upgrades to two different layers of the Ethereum network. The Shapella Upgrade is important for the Ethereum ecosystem because it indicates that Ethereum's transition to Proof of Stake (PoS) is now complete. The first step in the migration process was the Merge, which combined the PoW Ethereum chain with the Beacon Chain, which started in December 2020 and was successfully completed in September 2022. However, until Shapella, staking was just a one-way process, meaning users could deposit their ETH on the Beacon Chain and earn rewards, but not withdraw them. Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSDs) such as Lido Finance and Rocketpool have partially mitigated this lack of liquidity for users who stake ETH by issuing derivative tokens to provide liquidity. This significant upgrade will allow users to access and unstake more than 18 million ETH on the Beacon Chain, Ethereum's consensus layer network.
Will the Shapella Update affect Ethereum users in any way?
Ethereum users will not be affected by the implementation of Shapella and will be able to make transactions as always.
