On August 9, 2022, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced a collaboration with the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC) to explore CBDC use cases for Australia. The joint research resulted in the launch of a project to test general-purpose CBDC.
The 'Australian CBDC Pilot for Digital Finance Innovation' technical report stated:
"The key objectives of the project are to identify and understand innovative business models, use cases, benefits, risks and operational models for a CBDC in Australia."
Indeed, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has published a white paper outlining a detailed plan to run a pilot project for eAUD, joining the list of countries planning to launch a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
