Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology in China has renamed its 25-year-old Department of Information Engineering as the Department of Metaverse Engineering.
According to local media reports, Pan Zhigeng, Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence, to which the Metaverse department is affiliated, said they plan to jointly train Metaverse-focused master's, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows with Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the future.
Metaverse research institutions have begun to proliferate in China this year. In April, Renmin University of China established the Metaverse Research Center. In August, Tencent, Huawei and Epic Games established a research institute for metaverse and virtual reality interaction with multiple Chinese universities.
Meanwhile, local governments in Shanghai and Beijing have included the Metaverse in local development plans to boost the economy and investment.
