Trump’s Meme Coin Sparks Controversy: U.S. Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Ban Political Use of Crypto

U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, along with 14 fellow Democratic lawmakers, has introduced a bill aimed at limiting the political use of cryptocurrencies following Donald Trump’s growing involvement with meme coins.

Titled the “Stop Trading, Retention, and Unfair Market Payoffs in Crypto Act of 2025,” the bill seeks to ban the president, vice president, members of Congress, and their immediate families from issuing, holding, or promoting digital assets.

Waters criticized Trump’s crypto project as not only a scheme targeting investors but also a dangerous tool that could expose U.S. politics to influence from foreign adversaries such as Russia, China, and North Korea. The bill also includes provisions that prohibit public officials and their relatives from trading crypto assets or engaging in insider trading based on non-public market information. The proposal reflects growing concerns in Washington about the intersection of digital assets and political influence.
