Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published an article on Bitcoin's block size war. Buterin emphasized two main arguments for increasing Bitcoin's block size: the big block and small block sides. Big block supporters focus on low transaction fees, while small block supporters argue for the ease of running nodes.
Buterin noted that he has been on the big block side in the past, but that both sides have their strengths and weaknesses. He emphasized that big block supporters initially promised Bitcoin as a digital currency, but high transaction fees threatened this and led to a reliance on layer-2 protocols. The small block side thinks that big block supporters want to control Bitcoin, while big block supporters say that the small block side is closed to innovation.
Buterin gave the example of Bitcoin Cash, saying that big block supporters paid the price for focusing on opposing rather than building, and the community split twice more before it stabilized. He said he wrote this article to shape the future of Ethereum by learning from Bitcoin.
