What Is Cryptography?

Cryptography is a method of storing and transmitting data in a specific format so that only intended individuals can access and process it. Cryptography can protect data from theft or alteration and can be used for user authentication. Cryptography used to be based on encryption processes, but now it is mainly based on mathematical theory and computer science. The word "cryptography" is derived from the Greek word "kryptos", which means secret.

Cryptography technology, which is a core part of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, provides anonymous, confidential, and trustless transactions in accordance with the ecosystem. Thanks to cryptography, users in the cryptocurrency ecosystem carry out transactions in a confidential and secure way without the need for third parties. The cryptocurrency ecosystem isn’t the only place where cryptography is used. Computers and internet networks constantly encrypt and decrypt data, from each internet search performed to each email sent.

The use of cryptography in cryptocurrencies began with the launch of Bitcoin. While developing Bitcoin, the individual or individuals called Nakamoto benefitted from cryptography technology to create a public/private password encryption. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other cryptocurrencies use this technology. The Bitcoin network provides users with Private Keys and generates linked Public Keys using cryptographic methods. You can freely share your Public Key, which is the only information needed to send you Bitcoin. However, you need a Private Key to access your Bitcoins.

A Public Key is the address of a user on the Bitcoin network, just like an IBAN. A Private Key, on the other hand, is the key to the vault holding your assets. In decentralized blockchains, transactions are securely processed into the network without the need for third parties, and cryptography is behind this system.

The Future of Cryptography

As the adoption rate of cryptocurrencies increases, the areas of use of cryptography technology expand. So far, the Public/Private Key method has been successfully applied to the ecosystem. As technology evolves, there may be more cryptography methods that can lead to more secure solutions in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
