U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche has decided to shut down the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) cryptocurrency litigation unit in an effort to adopt a more friendly approach towards digital assets.
Blanche, known for being Trump’s defense lawyer in 2024, highlighted the necessity of this change in a memo. This decision signals that the U.S. government aims to take a more flexible and friendly stance on digital assets.
Blanche criticized former President Joe Biden’s strategy to control the blockchain industry, stating that this approach forced the DOJ to impose regulatory pressure on the crypto sector. He argued that the focus should now shift to individual criminals. A key factor behind this change is President Donald Trump’s support for cryptocurrencies.
Trump had promised during his campaign to make the U.S. a crypto hub and, in March, signed an executive order directing the creation of a Bitcoin reserve.
