What Is Radicle (RAD)?

Radicle (RAD) is a protocol designed for open-source software collaborations. RAD is the native token of the protocol. Radicle allows developers to manage and share their projects in a decentralized way. Developers can collaborate on code without having to rely on any intermediaries.

What Does Radicle (RAD) Offer?

Similar to centralized code collaboration platforms such as GitHub and GitLab, developers can collaborate to build DApps. This is made possible with Radicle’s peer-to-peer replication protocol called Radicle Link. Radicle Link maintains the efficiency of Git while providing a global decentralized data repository through a peer-to-peer network layer. Users can spread data through “gossip”, in other words, they keep backup copies on their computers and share local data with the network. Users can also fund and manage software projects initiated by others. This is a “pick-and-match” collaboration style where users host their own content and content that they find interesting. This is also called Radicle’s “bazaar-style” collaboration method.

Radicle’s Technology

The Radicle network protocol focuses on locating, replicating, and verifying repositories in the peer-to-peer code-hosting network. Its decentralized approach guarantees access to repositories regardless of their location or number of copies. At the heart of the project is a gossip-based protocol for exchanging meta-data between validators identified by Public Keys. Validators provide pool information through the gossip protocol mechanism to create routing tables that aid pool discovery and replication.

Radicle leverages Git to efficiently transfer data and offers compatibility with existing workflows. Radicle’s beta version with MacOS and Linux support was launched in November 2020. In February 2021, Radicle announced an Ethereum integration that introduced the smart contract system, token, and protocol governance through the Radicle DAO.

Peer-to-peer: Radicle ensures the certainty of code collaboration by running users’ own validators and develops a resilient network without the need for third parties.

Security: All social artifacts are stored on Git and signed using public-key cryptography. Radicle automatically verifies the authenticity of all data.

Radicle Stack: Radicle functions as a peer-to-peer protocol where every user on the network runs the same software called Radicle Stack. Radicle Stack consists of a command line interface and a network service called the Radicle Node.

The Radicle Team & Company

Radicle was designed with an open-source software collaboration infrastructure and developed by Monadic, a Berlin-based software company. Monadic states that the company doesn’t own Radicle, and that Radicle is an open-source project that anyone can use, modify, and contribute to. Monadic was founded in 2017, but work on Radicle began in 2018, the beta version was released in 2020, and the Ethereum integration was done in 2021. With the release of the beta version on the network, Radicle reached more than 1,000 projects and has attracted great interest in the Web3 ecosystem.

Monadic is headed by Alexis Sellier and Eleftherios Diakomichalis, who founded Radicle. Both are among the people who have achieved significant success in the sector and have remarkable careers.

Radicle’s Digital Asset Economy

RAD is the native token of the Radicle platform with a maximum supply of 99,999,620 RAD. RAD is used on the Radicle platform. It enables transactions on the network and economic interactions between participants. RAD is also used to allow the community to have a say in the platform and to access governance and voting services.

In 2021, the project raised $12M in an initial funding round led by NFX and Galaxy, in which Placeholder, Electric Capital, ParaFi Capital, and other companies participated.

The distribution of RAD is as follows:

Community Treasury: 50%

Early Supporters: 20%

Team: 19%

Foundation: 5%

Balancer Liquidity Bootstrapping Pool: 3.5%

Seeders Program: 2%

Reserves: 0.25%

Evaluation of Radicle

Radicle stands out with its innovative project vision that aims to provide a more transparent, open-source and collaborative software development environment. Radicle's development team has extensive experience and a strong vision for the future of the platform. The team is progressing in an innovative way, different from the current state of software development. With the release of the beta version on the network, Radicle has reached more than 1,000 projects and has received a lot of attention in the Web3 ecosystem. Radicle is still in its early stages, but it has made significant progress and has potential for growth and sustainability in the future.
